Rebecca Black became an internet sensation at a young age, when her debut single ‘Friday’ catapulted her onto the global radar. The release of the song was a turning point in internet culture and stands as an early example of an Internet or social media star achieving notoriety with their music and successfully projecting themselves into the music industry.
Thanks largely to social media and YouTube, the then 13-year-old became a household name and with the global fame came global criticism. ‘Friday’ became a meme before meme culture was even popularised. As an anti-bullying, mental health, and LGBTQ+ right advocate she has worked with the AdCouncil, GLAAD, Best Buddies, and as an ambassador for Planned Parenthood's 'Be Seen' campaign. Rebecca graced Variety’s 2021 ‘Power of Pride’ list, Viacom’s 2021 Logo30, and Bustle’s 2021 Pride Yearbook.
Recent years have seen Black enjoy new success as an independent musician – the release of her 2021 record, ‘Rebecca Black Was Here’, signalling her return in a new spotlight. The project was followed with a North American and European tour with sold out shows in New York City, Los Angeles, London, and Manchester among others and a special performance at Coachella's DoLab! Her follow up debut album comes out October 14, 2022 with a release show at Los Angeles' El Rey Theatre.
Rebecca Black will join Brag Media's Poppy Reid in conversation at BIGSOUND to discuss growing up in an unforgiving spotlight, finding her true artistry and coming into her own.
