South African-Australian musician and poet Ruby Gill was 4 years old when two things happened: she was forced to learn the piano, and she found a cockatiel in her new house in Johannesburg, abandoned by its previous owners. Both of these moments shaped a life of song, migration and attachment issues - to much acclaim.
The feted multi-instrumentalist flew straight to the top of Australia’s music scene when she first landed here in 2016, garnering millions of streams, playlisting and radio play on every major station in Australia and beyond, from triple j to KCRW. She has appeared on stages around the world, from Oppikoppi to Woodford, with “Emerging Artist of the Year” at Port Fairy Folk Festival to her name. A song she wrote during this nature immersion, “If God Is The Pigeon” comes out in August under Unyoked’s Field Recordings collection alongside Ngaiire, Milan Ring and others, mixed in Spatial for Apple Music. Her long-awaited debut album “I’m gonna die with this frown on my face” comes out September 2022.
